Editorial Standards and Sources

Wind & Honour publishes beginner guides to help readers identify Mahjong tiles, compare major forms of the game and prepare a table with fewer assumptions. Our articles are educational material, not a substitute for the complete rules used by a club, tournament or family table.

How we research Mahjong content

We prefer primary or authoritative sources: rules published by recognised Mahjong organisations, current competition documents, institutional collections and official guidance. Where a subject differs by region or ruleset, we name the form rather than presenting one practice as universal.

Sources currently used across the Journal include the European Mahjong Association, World Riichi Championship, British Mahjong Association-approved materials and the British Museum collection. Links appear at the end of each article so readers can check the original context.

How we distinguish rulesets

“Chinese-style” is a broad description, not a single worldwide scoring code. American Mah Jongg and Japanese Riichi have different equipment and procedural requirements. We avoid combining tile counts, calls, hand lists or scoring rules from different systems into one invented version.

Short beginner explanations mark where rules vary. Readers preparing for organised play should use the current complete rules specified by the organiser.

Product evidence

Product statements must apply to the exact item sold. We do not infer material, dimensions, weight, origin, delivery timing, safety status or compatibility from a similar-looking listing. Unknown details remain unstated until evidence for the exact product is available.

Images and ALT text describe what is genuinely visible. We do not add search phrases to ALT text when the photograph does not support them, and we do not use synthetic product imagery as proof of a product feature.

Commercial independence

Our selection guides explain criteria rather than declaring an untested product “best”. When a Wind & Honour product is relevant, the article identifies the verified limitation as well as the intended use. Educational pages are not written as independent third-party reviews.

Reviews and corrections

Each guide names the Wind & Honour Editorial Team and shows a review date. We review articles when a cited rules document changes, when a factual concern is raised or when product evidence changes.

To report an error, use the Contact page and include the article URL, the sentence in question and a source when available. We will check the original material and correct the public page when needed. Material corrections will update the review date.
